What significant milestones did your business achieve this year?
My major milestone was initiating the business itself. Participating in collaborative summer markets with Lake Linden and Calumet provided an incredible platform for introduction. The attendance exceeded my expectations, and I established a base of returning customers who consistently supported and patronized my business. Additionally, participating in Calumet’s Pasty Fest was nerve-wracking due to its scale, but the nearly sold-out sales on that day were a tremendous honor for my new small business.
How did you balance your physical and mental well-being while managing your business this year?
Maintaining my self-care was a priority while navigating business responsibilities. Firstly, I emphasized adequate rest, recognizing that fatigue can impair focus and rapidly lead to burnout. Secondly, I ensured a diversion from business concerns by engaging in outdoor activities, notably discovering a newfound passion for disc golf during the summer. This sport offered not only physical activity but also a mental break. Thirdly, I dedicated time to connect with loved ones, acknowledging the tendency for business owners to sacrifice personal time. Nurturing these relationships is vital for a fulfilling life. I strongly believe that by prioritizing self-care, we enhance our abilities in business while also enriching our capacity to give back to others.
What notable collaborations or projects did your team engage in with external partners this year?

This year brought about some exciting collaborations and initiatives that were truly standout moments for my business. One such venture was the partnership with K.C. Bonker’s for a pop-up shop concept. Inspired by the fashion and accessory industry’s use of pop-up shops to connect businesses and customers in unique ways, I saw this as an opportunity to showcase my products to a new audience while forming a relationship with an exciting venue. Setting up shop at K.C. Bonker’s on the third Wednesday of each month has been an amazing opportunity. The ambiance there is warm, inviting, and full of wonderful people, creating the perfect setting for showcasing my various items.
Moreover, new endeavors like the Bare Legs Farm Stand in Lake Linden and the Chassell Market in Houghton Indoors marked the inception of fully indoor markets for the winter season. Being among the first group of vendors at these events has been a privilege. At Bare Legs Farm Stand, hosted by Kim Rak, I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with other vendors like Lady A’s, Pine Cone Apothecary, and Copper Country Creations, engaging with the kind people of the morning weekend life in Lake Linden.
Additionally, the Houghton Indoor Market has gained substantial popularity. This market has been featured twice on channel 6 this season, and it’s been incredible to witness its growth each week, showcasing a variety of goods from breads and soaps to home goods and fresh veggies. These collaborations have not only expanded my business reach but also provided enriching experiences and connections within the community.
What valuable insights have you gained from your work experiences this year?
My most significant lesson learned revolves around the importance of planning. In my pursuit of delivering gourmet products for various events, I’ve often found myself burning the midnight oil and investing extensive hours in production. While I’m passionate about crafting these high-quality items, there have been instances where I let time slip away, resulting in stress and, on occasion, missing menu items for events. To mitigate these challenges, I’ve embraced meticulous scheduling, early planning, and a mindset geared towards anticipating potential setbacks. This approach not only keeps me on track but also affords me the opportunity to experiment with new recipes, venture into unexplored flavor territories, and adapt to unforeseen circumstances with a more flexible approach. Ultimately, I’ve come to understand that while planning is crucial, being adaptable and going with the flow is equally essential in the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship.
Who were the individuals you encountered this year that made a significant impact on your perspective or life?
Throughout this year, I had the privilege of meeting various individuals within the farming community, and each interaction was a valuable learning experience. The farmers I crossed paths with imparted unique insights and knowledge, offering diverse perspectives on agriculture, sustainability, and the intricate processes involved in cultivating produce. Their dedication and expertise have been truly inspiring, shaping my understanding of the interconnectedness between food production and community.

Interacting with other vendors at different events was an eye-opening experience. Witnessing the creativity of these vendors, especially in their product offerings and marketing approaches, was remarkable. It broadened my perspective on entrepreneurship and encouraged me to explore innovative ideas within my own business. The baking vendors, I encountered a wide array of skills and techniques. Engaging with individuals who share a passion for baking provided an opportunity for skill exchange and learning. Witnessing the variety of talents and expertise within this community not only expanded my knowledge base but also fueled my drive to continually improve and innovate in my own baking endeavors.
Our dedication to supporting local initiatives led us to collaborate with the office shop food pantry, where we regularly donate our delectable cupcakes and small cakes. This effort has not only been our own; it’s been an incredible community endeavor. Alongside fellow vendors, community members, and local businesses, we’ve joined forces to contribute to this cause. Ron, the owner of the office shop, and I, representing Superior Cupcakes, are proud to be part of this collective effort that aims to make a meaningful difference in supporting those in need within our community.

In essence, the interactions with farmers, fellow vendors, and baking enthusiasts significantly influenced my perspective, offering a wealth of knowledge, creativity, and inspiration that continues to shape my approach to business and life.
How did notable industry changes impact your business, and what adaptations did you make in response?
This year witnessed significant shifts in the industry, particularly with the growing awareness and popularity of farmer’s markets aligned with the farm-to-table movement. As this movement gained traction and more consumers gravitated towards locally sourced, fresh produce, it presented a valuable opportunity for my business. I capitalized on this trend by actively participating in farmer’s markets, leveraging their popularity to showcase my products made from locally sourced ingredients. This allowed me to align my brand with the ethos of the farm-to-table movement, emphasizing freshness and community support.
Additionally, the evolving landscape of dietary preferences and eating trends, such as the increasing demand for gluten-free products, posed both a challenge and an opportunity. Recognizing the importance of catering to diverse dietary needs, I diversified my product range to include options that accommodated various diets. This involved intensive research into alternative ingredients and meticulous recipe development to ensure the quality, taste, and inclusivity of my offerings. Adapting to these eating trends enabled me to reach a wider customer base and meet the evolving preferences of consumers, ultimately enhancing the marketability of my products.
This adaptability and responsiveness to industry shifts have not only positioned my business favorably but have also allowed me to meet the changing demands and preferences of consumers within the market.
